The first image labeled “Mom & son” was shot at the Kid’s Lit Fair at the Portland Public Library in October of 2024. Where Maine Reads had been selling briskly all summer, and I was itchin’ to embark upon a sequel. This charming scenario, nestled in the middle of a story-telling group of parents and kids, captivated me. I could not help staring at them from a respectable distance. Afterwards I approached her and explained my project. She was flattered and fascinated. Ironically, her son’s name was “Reade” or perhaps “Reid”. I gave her my card, and asked her to get in touch with me. Alas, I never heard from her. Perhaps she lost my card. Regardless, after meeting and photographing 50 more readers, it dawned on me to dedicate the book to her—and other parents who (love their kids well enough) to expose them to libraries as my own mom did with me. After you read this, endeavor to read to or take a kid to your local library. Thanks— on their behalf.
Maine's Still Reading is available at many bookstores throughout Maine, and online at islandportpress.com.
