The Last Cadillac

On October 29th, 2012, Hurricane Sandy rumbled and ravaged her way up the Eastern seaboard, pounding and devastating much of New Jersey’s famed shoreline.   In particular, the resort town of Seaside Heights, where I’d spent summers back in the 50’s was battered and shattered. For days,  heartbreaking images of the devastation – certainly the iconic twisted roller-coaster image – permeated all social media platforms, print pages and television screens for weeks thereafter. I’ve ridden on that roller-coaster. The stomach-churning experience, as well as a million others are integrated into this story – an homage to my grandfather whose small railroad-style house on Sheridan Ave, miraculously survived.

Today, Seaside Heights and the Jersey Shore have rebuilt and moved on. But what forever remains, unscathed, are the many warm, indelible memories. I packed mine up, and stashed them into the trunk of a story called The Last Cadillac. Hop in – enjoy the ride!
